What is a SETA?

Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA), is a multi-sector vocational skills training firm in South Africa. Since March 2020, there are twenty-one SETA’s in operation. Each SETA is charged with developing and managing learnerships, internship, unit based skills programs, and apprenticeships within its jurisdiction. This is the largest sector education and training agency in South Africa and is dedicated to developing, maintaining and enhancing the nation’s skills base. SETA has a diverse range of career options and it has an active program in career transition for its learners and trainees. The aim of this program is to develop a well-rounded and confident workforce that can adapt to change and improve their overall quality of life.

How to Register With SETA

Do you wish to register your company with SETA? These simple steps should help: 

  1. Ensure your company is registered with the Skills Development Levy and paying their 1% contribution to the levy. 
  2. Indicate on the SARS form that you would like to register with your industry specific SETA. 
  3. Set up a Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) . This is a document that outlines how the employer is going to address the training and development needs at his/her workplace.
  4. Once you have implemented the Workplace Skills Plan, a company will be eligible for a Workplace Implementation Grant.

List of SETAS

As mentioned, the economy is split into 21 sectors. This means that there are 21 SETAS that plan and manage the training of South Africa’s workers. 

AGRISETA

This sector creates opportunities for people who would like to start a career in the agriculture industry.  They teach skills relevant to the field, and promote all aspects of this industry. 

Bank SETA

Banking Sector Education and Training Authority aims to create skills and programmes that will enable individuals to become successful in the banking and finance industry.

Chieta

Chieta aims to develop skills and create programmes for anyone who wants to enter a career in the chemical industries.

EWSETA

The Energy & Water Sector Education Training Authority teaches skills and creates programmes for people who want to be successful in this industry.

PSETA

The Public Service Sector Education and Training Authority seeks to develop skills in the public sector to individuals who would like to start their careers in the local government.

CETA

Construction Education and Training Authority aims to combat the scarce skills in the construction sector by creating and promoting programmes to individuals who would like to kickstart a career in the construction industry.

CATHSSETA

The Culture, Art, Tourism, Hospitality, and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority develops and enhances skills in a wide variety of industries. This authority creates skills programmes for many different fields, such as travel and tourism. 

ETDP SETA

The Education, Training and Development Practices Sector Education and Training Authority seeks to develop skills to provide and enhance skills in the Education sector.

FP&M SETA

Fibre Processing and Manufacturing (FP&M) SETA creates and promotes skills in a wide variety of sectors and to strengthen sectors that are closely related to each other.

FASSET

Finance and Accounting Services Sector Education and Training Authority aims to teach finance and accounting skills to have more equipped professionals in the financial sector.

FOODBEV SETA

This sector creates skills development programmes to people who would like to be successful in the food and beverage industry

HWSETA

The Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority trains and creates skills for individuals who would like to start their career in the Health and welfare industry.

INSETA

The skills in this industry are very poor and they would like to increase the amount of insurance professionals in South Africa.

LGSETA

The Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority aims to create skills and train individuals who will sustain and maintain practices within local governments.

MERSETA

Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services creates skills development programmes that will increase the amount of engineering and manufacturing professionals in our country.

MICT

The Media, Information and Communications Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority aims to provide skills and training to individuals who would like to have a successful career in the media and communications field.

MQA

In this field individuals are able to learn more about the mining industry and how to have a successful career

SASSETA

The Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority  creates and promotes skills development programmes that aim to teach and train individuals who would like to start a career in this field.

Services SETA

Services SETA creates, facilitates and promotes the skills development programmes that will teach individuals workplace skills. 

TETA

Transport Education Training Authority aims to teach and train individuals the skills needed in all aspects of transportation and create a strong transportation workforce in South Africa.

W&RSETA

The aims of this sector is  to facilitate the needs for skilled professionals in the wholesale and retail sector.
